Here’s How I DIYed Black Window Transformation for Under $10

This super easy and budget-friendly hack will give your windows a totally new look. Spray paint. Electrical tape. Total transformation.

Let’s jump right in.

Here is my window before this little makeover.

I was in the process of a total room transformation, so the trim had yet to be painted. This made it easier to spray paint, since I did not have to tape off any of the trim, just the window itself. For that, I used sheets of paper and painter’s tape.

I started by using this black spray paint. I recommend using something made specifically for vinyl for the best adhesion.

As always, when spray painting, use multiple light coats. Let dry before applying the next coat.

When finished painting, remove your tape and scrape any paint off the window with this handy tool

Faux Window Panes

To prepare for the electrical tape panes, I measured the length and width of the window.

My electrical tape is 3/4 (0.75) inch wide, so I subtracted that from my measurement and divided by 2.

Example:

The window is 24 inches wide.

24 (window width) – 0.75 (width of tape) = 23.25

then

23.25  divided by 2 = 11.6

This will be your vertical tape line (up and down) I measured 11.5 inches from the right side of the window and made a mark with a washable marker every 2 inches.

Window is 40 inches tall.

40 (window height) – 0.75 (width of tape) = 39.25

then

39.25 divided by 2 = 19.6

This will be your horizontal tape line (left to right) I measured 19.5 (close enough) inches from the top of the window and made a mark with a washable marker every 2 inches.

Laying the tape

You want to make sure that the edge of the tape is lined up on the correct side of your markings. If you measured from the right side of the window, the tape should be on the on the right side of your markings.

Getting the tape straight is easiest if you keep it tight and push it onto the window at each marking, making sure that the edge of the tape is right on the edge of the mark.

Once your tape is applied, smooth it out with a plastic putty knife to remove any bubbles. This step is crucial. Bubbles will be visible from the exterior.

Cut the excess tape off with a sharp utility blade.

This totally elevated the look of my old white vinyl windows. This is a great solution if you are looking for a way to upgrade the look of your old windows on a very minimal budget.

Here are a few windows in my home I have spray painted black! Quite the upgrade if I do say so myself.

I used this same technique in my primary bedroom makeover in the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge!
